Consumption Response to Credit Expansions: Evidence from Experimental Assignment of 45,307 Credit Lines

چکیده

In a field experiment that constructs randomized credit limit shock, participants borrow to spend 11 cents on the dollar in first quarter and 28 by third year. Effects extend those far from limit, who had new limits as available credit, with liquid asset buffer. short-run, flexible installment contracts are used tandem, unconstrained using installments more. Long-run borrowing is predominantly installments. Near limits, when expands but save out of constraints tight. Findings support buffer-stock interpretation emphasizing precautionary saving. The Marginal Propensity to Consume Out of Liquidity: Evidence from Random Assignment of 54,522 Credit Lines∗

This paper studies how consumer spending, debt, and labor supply decisions respond to an exogenous shock to credit availability. I design and implement a randomized trial at a European retail bank where I deliberately vary the credit card limits of 54,522 pre-existing card holders. I obtain four empirical results: (1) credit availability has a large and significant effect on spending and the us...

Credit Assignment through Time: Alternatives to Backpropagation

Learning to recognize or predict sequences using long-term context has many applications. However, practical and theoretical problems are found in training recurrent neural networks to perform tasks in which input/output dependencies span long intervals. Starting from a mathematical analysis of the problem, we consider and compare alternative algorithms and architectures on tasks for which the ...

The Social Credit Assignment Problem

Social credit assignment is a process of social judgment whereby one singles out individuals to blame or credit for multi-agent activities. Such judgments are a key aspect of social intelligence and underlie social planning, social learning, natural language pragmatics and computational models of emotion. Based on psychological attribution theory, this paper presents a preliminary computational...
